Sunday Times: Two more charged over racist graffiti [ 23jul04 ]

TWO more alleged members of a white supremacist group charged over a graffiti attack on a Perth synagogue will spend tonight behind bars after briefly facing court charged with criminal damage. The pair appeared in Perth Court of Petty Sessions yesterday on one count each of criminal damage. They are the second pair to be charged with criminal damage over the attack on a Perth synagogue, after a 28-year-old and 24-year-old faced the same court on Wednesday. One accused is additionally charged with racial vilification and is undergoing a psychiatric assessment ahead of a court appearance next week, while the other was granted bail. Police will allege the men are members of the neo-Nazi group the Australian Nationalist Movement (ANM), headed by Jack van Tongeren. Van Tongeren, who spent 12 years behind bars after being convicted of a string of racially motivated firebombings in Perth in the 1980s, has denied any involvement in the weekend graffiti attacks.
