Skinheads chased off by anti-Nazi brigade

The National Front was run out of town by an angry mob when it staged a march on parliament yesterday. About 40 National Front members, most of them skinheads, led by National Front president Kyle Chapman, attended the protest, ostensibly in support of retaining the New Zealand flag. However, they were surrounded by a crowd of hundreds of anti-racism protesters chanting "Nazi scum", and were prevented from leaving. Most National Front protesters managed to get away with police assistance in several cars, after being chased down the street, and a standoff that lasted about two hours. One National Front member left behind was assaulted by people in the crowd, and had to be rescued by police. At least one National Front member and one opposing protester were arrested. The separate March for a Multicultural Aotearoa, attended by about 2000 people, arrived at parliament after the National Front left and proceeded peacefully.
