Dallas Voice - Rights group take on religious extremists

New report from Southern Poverty Law Center links Christian leaders’ anti-gay rhetoric to anti-GLBT hate crime violence Intelligence Report, a national magazine published by the Southern Poverty Law Center, has taken aim at the religious right for the first time in the civil rights group’s 34-year history. The coverage puts organizations such as James Dobson’s Focus on the Family and the Rev. Donald Wildmon’s American Family Association in the company of the Ku Klux Klan, neo-Nazis, Christian Identity devotees, skinheads and other extremists the magazine has tracked for the past three decades. The 23-pages that the magazine devotes to the Spring 2005 cover story, “Holy War: The Religious Right’s Crusade Against Gays Heats Up,” chronicles events from the birth of the religious right’s anti-gay movement to the ongoing battles for state constitutional amendments banning same-sex marriages.
