Hate crime charged in mailman assault

A 21-year-old Modestan with ties to a white skinhead gang is being charged with a hate crime in connection with a savage beating of a Ceres mail carrier on his route Wednesday afternoon. Shane Douglas Collins, 21, of Modesto, was arrested by Ceres Police after attempting to ellude officers after the crime. (...) Collins has numerous Nazi symbols tattooed on his body and is affiliated with the Nazi Low Riders white supremist gang, said Sgt. Sullivan. Police believe that Collins chose to attack Singh because he is of Indian ethnicity. On Monday Stanislaus County District Attorney James Brazelton announced he would seek charges of felonious assault by means of force likely to cause great bodily harm as well as enhancements alleging that Collins committed a hate crime. Collins was also charged with two counts of burglary, and resisting arrest. U.S. Postal inspectors are looking at adding federal charges which carries a three-year prison sentence. A maximum sentence of 11 years in prison could await Collins is prosecuted.
