Guardian Unlimited Politics | Special Reports | Mother's poll victory over BNP

A mother defeated the British National party in a by-election last night, having taken it on for using her daughter's experience of being groomed for sex as a way to campaign against Asian men. Angela Sinfield won the Keighley West seat on Bradford council for Labour with a majority of 603 over the far right party. The BNP has targeted Keighley and at last year's general election, its leader, Nick Griffin, chose to stand there, securing 9% of the vote. In last night's vote, BNP candidate Ian Dawson came second with 1,216 ahead of Conservative Lionel Lockley, 627 votes and Liberal Democrat Victoria Salmons, 208 votes. The BNP won four seats on Bradford council in 2004. This has now been reduced to three. siehe auch: Mother out to seize stronghold of 'unforgivable' BNP
