Guardian Unlimited Football | Euro 2004 | Croatia face fine for supporters' racist chants
Croatia's football association could be fined by Uefa after their fans made 'monkey' noises and displayed banners with racist insignia at Thursday's Euro 2004 match against France. Uefa's spokesman Robert Faulkner said yesterday that the incidents were to be considered by its disciplinary committee. If the fans are found guilty, the Croatian FA could be punished. Uefa's anti-racism partner FARE (Football Against Racism in Europe) reported that at least two banners with extreme right-wing insignia of the 'white power' movement were on display at the match in Leiria, and Croatian fans made monkey noises at France's black players. 'We are considering the reports of the match delegates and the referee,' said Faulkner. Swastikas were not displayed although there were Celtic crosses, the symbol of extreme right-wingers in Croatia.
