NBC5.com - NBC5 - Special Report: White Supremacy Alive In U.S.

Organizers Use Internet To Build Hate Network NBC5's Carol Marin on Tuesday took a look at groups like the Ku Klux Klan and the Aryan Nation. To find out the state of the white far right, she tracked down a man who for more than 25 years has been in the forefront of the movement in America. Marin and her crew met Tom Metzger in a hotel in Warsaw, Ind., where he was visiting his family. Although he now lives in California, central Indiana is where Metzger was born and grew up. Metzger, whose lineage dates back to the John Birch Society and the KKK, told Marin he considers himself "an ideological terrorist." No one knows for sure just how wide and deep the white supremacy movement is in the United States. In the last few years, a number of leaders have died, like Richard Butler, of the Aryan Nation. Adam Schupack, with the Anti-Defamation League in Chicago, thinks the movement has gone adrift. "I would say that the organizations are rudderless," Schupack said. "There are definitely people who are trying to fill the void -- people like Tom Metzger from California, Billy Roper from Arkansas and, of course, Matt Hale."
