News - BNP leader faces jail after being charged with inciting hatred
The British National Party's leader and founder have been charged with race hate offences following comments made in an undercover investigation of party activists by the BBC.
The party leader, Nick Griffin, 45, was charged with four counts of inciting racial hatred - which carries a maximum sentence of seven years in prison - when he answered bail at Halifax police station yesterday.
Earlier in the day the BNP's founder, John Tyndall, 70, and a former youth wing leader, Mark Collett, 24, were also charged with using words or behaviour intended or likely to stir up racial hatred. They are charged with two counts and eight counts respectively. All three men have been ordered to appear today before Leeds magistrates' court.
