Police arrest suspect in attempt to bomb Paris synagogue
French authorities have arrested a suspect behind an attempted bombing of a synagogue northwest of Paris, the interior minister said Thursday. Dominique de Villepin said the suspect had sought to use a homemade bomb overnight from May 7-8 at the synagogue in suburban Villiers-le-Bel. De Villepin did not identify the suspect, but vowed legal action. (...) France has experienced a new upsurge in attacks against synagogues, Jewish cemeteries and monuments. Last month, vandals painted swastikas and other anti-Semitic graffiti on 127 tombstones at a cemetery in eastern France.
De Villepin said France would take a three-pronged approach in the fight against anti-Semitism: speeding up investigations to bring culprits to justice; increasing security measures for Jewish schools and religious sites; and reminding police about how to encourage victims of anti-Semitism to exercise their legal rights.
