kvue.com | The cost of hosting the KKK?
Everyone in the U.S. has the right to voice their opinion, including the Ku Klux Klan, but Thursday KVUE News learned how much it cost taxpayers to foot the bill for security at November's Klan rally in front of Austin City Hall. The rally was attended by about eight Klansmen and supporters and thousands of protestors.
The grand total comes to about $122,000 to $123,000. Most of that cost -- about $115,000 -- was for overtime for Austin police officers. Officials tell KVUE news anywhere from about 200 to 250 APD officers provided security for the rally and protest, although some of those officers were on their regular duty.
The rest of the money paid for equipment: helicopters, boats, water, food and barricades.
